Doctors Ronald Bergman and Ryan Folkers were able to save the arm of 62-year-old Thomas Krengel in a four-hour surgery after he was attacked by two chow chows at a friend’s home on June 12.
According to Krengel, he was trying to let his friend’s chow chows, Chico and Monte, into the house. When trying to break up the two dogs, who were copulating, Krengel was attached. The dogs bit down on Krengel’s arm when he used it protect his throat. The attack caused damage to the skin, tendons, arteries, and even the forearm bone.
Sergeant Jim Butler, chief humane officer with the Des Moines Police Department, said the male dog, Monte, was ordered to be euthanized on Monday, July 1.
The plastic surgeons, who specialize in performing surgeries on victims who have been attacked by dogs, also recently treated a Dallas County woman and a 4-year-old Prairie City girl.
