Cosmetic surgery considerably increased in 2013 due to the rise in popularity of procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and Botox, the Independent reported on July 30. Over 23 million cosmetic and non-surgical operations were performed in 2013, according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
The United States headed the list of most cosmetic procedures done, with 4 million procedures. Brazil followed in second with 2 million. President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons Rajiv Grover attributes the rise in surgeries to the growth of the economy.
Breast implants were by the far the most popular surgery, with more than 1.7 million operations performed in 2013. Female patients dominated the number of cosmetic surgery procedures, making up 90 percent of the total number.
