More and more citizens of Brazil consider cosmetic plastic surgery procedures to enhance their physical appearance, an article on NPR reported October 8.
Though Brazil has fewer people and less individual buying power than the U.S., they are far surpassing America in elective cosmetic surgeries. A statistic from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery revealed that there were 1.5 million procedure performed in Brazil in 2013. NPR reporter Lourdes Garcia-Navarro notes that while many people in the U.S. hide these surgeries, many in Brazil are proud of their enhancements; they “consider it an investment.” Francesco Mazzarone, a prominent cosmetic surgeon in Brazil, states that “the patients come here to get back something they lost in time. We give to them the right to dream.”
