Differences Between Micro-needling and Botox Treatment

There are a wide number of anti-aging and skin smoothing treatments available today that can be used to improve aging or damaged skin so that you may feel like your best self. It can be difficult to know the differences between these treatments and determine which procedure is the right fit for you, which is why learning the distinction between Botox injections and micro-needling can ultimately help you choose which course of action is best.

How Do They Differ?

Although there is much overlap in how Botox and micro-needling are used to improve the overall look and feel of skin, the two procedures are distinctively different in the following ways:

  • Application: While both procedures are minimally invasive, Botox involves individual injections by a very fine needle that sends a muscle-relaxing agent into places prone to fine-lines and wrinkles. In contrast, micro-needling is the process by which a dermaroller with many fine needles is run over the skin, penetrating deep layers and creating several small punctures at once.
  • Chemical Process: Through Botox treatment, a protein called Botulinum toxin is injected into the skin and blocks nerve muscles responsible for repetitive actions that cause wrinkles. In this way, your face is allowed to relax and fine lines are smoothed. On the other hand, micro-needling creates tiny holes in the skin through small punctures that trigger the body to naturally produce new collagen and other healing mechanisms. This rejuvenates the skin, improving firmness, hydration, and texture.

Both procedures have been highly lauded in skincare technology and understanding how each process is different will make you better informed when deciding which treatment you wish to prescribe to. Micro-needling has only been shown to be effective when the needles penetrate deep layers of the skin, preventing some at-home micro-needling kits from yielding proper results.
