What to Expect During and After Sclerotherapy

What to Expect During and After Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that removes spider and varicose veins by injecting chemical sclerosis into the veins. Depending on the severity of the veins, the quick procedure typically lasts between 5 and 30 minutes. After each injection, pressure will be applied to the area. Bruising around the area is to be expected, but usually goes away within a few weeks.

While there is no real recovery time, the area may be sore shortly after the procedure due to slight bruising. Sclerosis is also known to cause an itching sensation shortly after the injection. After the treatment, you will be able to walk out of the appointment and resume your daily routine. It may be recommended that you wear compression socks for best results, depending on the area and size of your veins. Heat can cause the veins to dilate and come to the surface of your skin, so it is not recommended that you take a hot bath after your treatment.

Planning your Procedure

Sclerotherapy can be scheduled at any time and is such a quick procedure that you could schedule a session during your lunch break. However, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Special occasions: If you have a special occasion coming up and you do not want to have bruising on visible areas of your legs, then it is best to plan your treatment well in advance, or after the occasion.
  • Pregnancy: Sclerotherapy should not be performed while pregnant, though pregnancy is a known cause of spider veins.
  • Weather: Cooler weather allows you to cover the affected area with seasonal clothing, but the procedure can be done any time of year as sun will not hinder results.
