Are Procedures Outpatient or Inpatient?

Are Procedures Outpatient or Inpatient?

Depending on the circumstances of a procedure, a patient may be expected to make different arrangements for overnight care. In most situations, cosmetic surgery is considered outpatient surgery, which means that a patient is free to go after the procedure, giving them the opportunity to recover at home under the supervision of someone else. However, some procedures or circumstances may prompt surgeons to recommend inpatient care or to make special arrangements that can allow for adequate monitoring of a recovering patient after their surgery.

At Bergman Plastic Surgery, we work to provide our Iowa patients with the best experience we can. We believe in creating a strong patient-doctor connection and keeping our patients happy with their results, regardless of whether they pursue an inpatient or outpatient surgery.

When Inpatient Care May Be Required

Most surgical procedures require a significant amount of recovery before the patient should consider physically strenuous activity, but this recovery process can often be done in the comfort of a person’s own home. However, there are some procedures or circumstances that may call for inpatient care after a surgery, including the following:

  • If a procedure is particularly intensive and requires close monitoring
  • If an unexpected complication requires medical attention
  • If a patient can’t arrange for outpatient care immediately after their procedure

Inpatient care is generally reserved for instances when it’s absolutely necessary, as patients should otherwise be given the opportunity to recuperate at their own pace and in the familiar comfort of their home.
