People often interchangeably use the terms cosmetic surgery procedures and plastic surgery. However, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), there are significant distinctions between the two practices.
The first main difference between the two procedures is the goal of the treatment. Cosmetic surgery’s main purpose is to defy age and improve the appearance of a particular part of a person’s body. Some examples of cosmetic surgery are breast lift, rhinoplasty, cheek enhancement, and skin rejuvenation procedures. On the other hand, the goal of plastic surgery is to restore or repair a particular part of the body either because of a defect, illness, or injury. Some samples of plastic surgery procedures include skin grafting, breast reconstruction, hand surgery, and congenital defect repairs.

Many people, especially women, start to notice veins that are visible on their legs and feet. These veins can have an adverse effect, making some embarrassed to wear their favorite skirts or shorts. Fortunately, spider and varicose veins are curable through sclerotherapy procedure.
Although unsightly veins are genetically acquired and common to women, multiple factors can aggravate varicose and spider veins. Women who are taking contraceptive pills, pregnant, or in the menopausal stage are likely to develop visible veins on their legs. Individuals who work at jobs that demand standing and those who are obese are also more likely to have visible veins. Sclerotherapy is a procedure that gradually eradicates varicose and spider veins. The procedure uses fine needles to inject a specialized salt solution directly into the visible veins. Furthermore, the procedure can be performed in just 30 minutes.
If you are considering sclerotherapy procedure, the expert team at Bergman Folkers Plastic Surgery in Des Moines can help you. Learn more about this wonderful treatment today by calling (515) 222-1111.

Aging individuals may realize one day that the skin around their eyelids has begun to wrinkle or droop as fat and excess skin develop around the eyes. One way to address cosmetic eyelid problems like these is to undergo a procedure called a blepharoplasty. The term blepharoplasty refers to a number of different surgeries that are meant to correct any cosmetic issues related to the eyelids. Below are the following eyelid problems that blepharoplasty can improve:
- Excessive eye bags
- Disfigured or deformed eyelids
- Thin wrinkles
- Sagging eyelids
- Unwanted fat in the eyelids
Blepharoplasty may also address some vision problems by removing skin that impedes the line of sight. Individuals who have decided to undergo eyelid reconstruction should first consult with their ophthalmologist and plastic surgeon in order to get a better understanding of what will be involved in the procedure.

Waxing can be used to remove unwanted hair in a number of areas, including the eyebrows, upper lip, legs, feet, arms, pubic area, and back.
While there are at-home waxing kits available, a professional aesthetician will be able to provide a quality waxing service that will give you the best results. After a hand injury convinced local musician Joryn John Brown that he would never play guitar again, Ronald Bergman of Bergman Folkers Plastic Surgery was able to perform a surgery that will let Brown play fully again.
Brown, a Des Moines resident, has been creating music since he was just two years old and now, at 20-years-old, is a part of five different bands. On the weekend before Thanksgiving, Brown set out to rehearse with one of these bands but had to track through seven inches of snow that a storm had brought to Des Moines. Carrying a massive guitar amp over ice and snow caused Brown to slip and fall, with the amp crushing his ring finger and pinky finger. When Brown saw the extent of the damage, he believed it was too severe to ever allow him the use of his left hand, ruining his guitar-playing abilities.
When the ambulance arrived, he was immediately taken to Mercy Medical Center where he came under the care of Dr. Bergman. Bergman performed a procedure in which he inserted both fingers back into place and put the whole hand in a cast, a surgery he has been performing for over 40 years. In just a few weeks, Bergman will be able to remove the cast and with time and physical therapy, Brown will be able to play the guitar again. “He was very reassuring through the whole thing,” Brown said of Bergman, “He’s the absolute cream of the crop when it comes to these kinds of injuries.”
Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has shown that more and more people are going for less invasive procedures to treat cosmetic facial issues; in 2014, these procedures saw a six percent rise from their 2013 numbers. It is estimated that about 6.7 million Botox treatments were performed, making this the number one minimally invasive facial cosmetic treatment in the country.
Coming in just after Botox are treatments that use fillers to replace intravenous fat in order to rejuvenate skin by “plumping up” areas in order to reduce wrinkles. It is becoming apparent that women and men are more interested in these simple treatments, as they can have an incredible impact on aging skin while still being very easy on patients during recovery.
At Bergman Folkers Plastic Surgery in Des Moines, our team has been performing these minimally invasive treatments for years. Let our experience and knowledge work for you; call (515) 222-1111 to schedule a meeting with our surgeons and get answers to all of your questions today.
While the aging process is inevitable, some individuals who want to improve their looks may consider the benefits offered by “micro-needling” procedures.
Micro-needling is worth considering for individuals who have wrinkles, acne scars, and huge facial pores. This minimally intrusive procedure involves the use of groups of fine needles puncturing the skin. The process helps improve the skin as the micro needles aid the release of collagen resulting in younger looking and smoother skin. Though micro-needling is often a painless procedure, patients may notice minimal skin redness after treatment. Patients may need to undergo several micro-needling sessions in a medical spa depending on their skin condition and desired effect.
The Bergman Folkers Plastic Surgery team in Des Moines offers safe and simple micro-needling procedures for individuals who want to look younger. If you want to know more about this exciting way of rejuvenating your skin, schedule an appointment with us today by calling (515) 222-1111.
Some women in Des Moines who develop varicose veins or ugly spider veins in their legs may benefit from undergoing sclerotherapy treatment, which may allow them to wear their favorite shorts and skirts again.
After getting a go signal from a dermatologist, candidates for sclerotherapy should expect the procedure to take 15 to 30 minutes. During the procedure, a very thin needle will be utilized to introduce the “salt solution” through the unsightly veins. Individuals may feel minor cramping or discomfort for a few minutes depending on where the solution is injected. Individuals who have undergone the procedure may notice an improvement just a few weeks after treatment.
It is important that individuals considering sclerotherapy treatment tell their doctor all the medicines they are taking. It should also be noted that patients should not put any lotion on in the treated area after the procedure.
If you are currently considering undergoing sclerotherapy treatment procedure to restore the beauty of your legs, the Bergman Folkers Plastic Surgery expert team in Des Moines may help you. Book us today at (515) 222-1111 to find out more about this wonderful treatment.
