Deviated Septum and the Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Deviated Septum and the Benefits of Rhinoplasty

A deviated septum is a condition in which the septum, a thin piece of cartilage that separates the two nostrils of the nose, is crooked. This deviation causes the two nasal passages to be uneven and can thus, depending on the severity, lead to breathing problems and other various nasal-related issues.

Statistically, around 80% of all people suffer from a deviated septum to a certain degree, but the more serious cases require rhinoplasty, otherwise known as nose surgery. Not only does rhinoplasty improve the negative side effects brought on by a deviated septum, but this surgery can also improve the appearance of the nose by realigning the bone.

Deviated Septum Symptoms

The off centered nasal cavity in relation to septum deviation can cause a number of symptoms, some of which include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Frequent or recurrent sinus infections
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Headaches
  • Postnasal drip
  • Loud breathing
  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea (in more serious cases)

If you have experienced or are currently experiencing any of these symptoms, you could be suffering from a deviated septum. In this case, rhinoplasty would likely be highly beneficial to your overall quality of life.
