Four Questions to Ask Your Cosmetic Surgeon

Four Questions to Ask Your Cosmetic Surgeon

To get the best results from a cosmetic procedure, it is important to have open communication with your surgeon. During your consultation, you should be able to articulate clearly the motivations behind your surgery, the results you are looking for, and any concerns you may have. During your one-on-one consultation with your doctor, you should ask a few questions no matter what type of cosmetic surgery you are considering. These questions include:

What are your credentials?

In the United States, any licensed physician is legally allowed to perform cosmetic surgery. The best way to ensure your cosmetic surgeon is properly trained and has considerable experience is to ask if they are certified with the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. This board certification means your doctor has completed, at minimum, a 12-month cosmetic surgery fellowship, and surgical residency in a related specialty.

How many times have your performed this procedure?

It is always important to know your doctor’s background and experience. Cosmetic surgeons often specialize is a certain procedure, such as rhinoplasty. While a rhinoplasty specialist may be very skilled and experienced in that area, they may not be the best option for a different procedure. The more times a surgeon has performed a certain procedure, the more before-and-after photos they will have to show you at your consultation. By viewing the surgeon’s previous work, you will be able to get a sense of exactly what results you are looking for.

What are the risks?

Every surgery comes with risks. It is important to know exactly what risks are associated with your procedure. These may include scarring, pain, infection, blood clots, and more. Be sure to ask about the risks involved before your cosmetic surgery.

What will recovery be like?

Many patients are so excited for the results of their cosmetic procedure that they do not consider the recovery process. It is important to have your surgeon clearly communicate what recovery will be like. You may be in serious pain or unable to complete tasks you normally would.
